The summer has certainly arrived in Norfolk with temperatures soaring over the last couple of days; however, don’t let this lovely weather cloud your judgement over home security and personal safety.

Opportunist thieves will be on the look-out for personal property left within easy reach of open windows and unlocked doors.

Common mistakes are leaving handbags and car keys close to unlocked front or back doors, or leaving jewellery and electronic items on display near an open window.

To deter walk-in thieves, householders are advised to:

· Keep doors and windows shut and locked where possible, especially if the room/home is unoccupied.

· Lock your doors if you are spending time outside and out of view of your home.

· When answering your door, make sure other external doors are locked first.

· Keep valuables and personal property out of sight, remove from window sills, worktops and tables.

· Remember to keep sheds and garages locked as garden equipment is also vulnerable at this time of year.

Also vulnerable at this time of year are cars left for long periods of time at coastal car parks and beauty spots. Motorists are advised to remove all valuables from display and from the vehicle where possible.

Finally, Norfolk is well known for its maze of open waterways and on a hot day the water may look an inviting place to cool down. Please remember the rivers around the broads are unsuitable for swimming in and have hidden dangers such as a sudden change in depth, decreases in temperatures and unseen objects and currents, which can cause even the strongest of swimmers to get into difficulty very quickly so don’t be tempted to use them as a way of cooling off.

Appeal following exposure in Caister

Police are appealing for information following an exposure in Caister.

A teenage girl was walking along Manor Road, near to the car park on Braddock Road, at approximately 3.45pm on Friday 15 July 2016 when a man walking in front of her exposed himself.

Officers are keen to identify the man who is described as white, aged 35 to 40, approximately 6ft tall, of medium build, fair skin and short dark hair. He was wearing a dark purple T-shirt and dark blue denim jeans.

Anyone with information should contact PC Craig Johnstone at Great Yarmouth Police Station on 101.

Alternatively contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Public Toilets

The Public Toilets in Martham are still open. In order to save money Great Yarmouth Borough Council has fitted automatic locks – this means that the doors are closed, but you can get in from 8am to 8pm every day.

Police Safer Community Awards:

Norfolk Safer Community Awards (NOSCAs) 2016

Has your local police officer, member of police staff or community volunteer gone that extra mile for you?

Is there something they do for your community that you would like to acknowledge?

Norfolk Constabulary is asking you to show your appreciation by voting for them in our annual Norfolk Safer Community Awards (NOSCAs).

Now entering its ninth year, the NOSCAs offer people the opportunity to support the continued efforts of their local community and Norfolk Constabulary in keeping the county a safe place to live, work and visit.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey said he believed the NOSCAs helped to highlight excellence from police officers, staff and members of the community.

He said: “I am always delighted to recognise people who go that extra mile. I would urge you all to nominate and vote for those people from your local community who you believe through their actions and words have made a difference to the area in which we all live and work.”

Three new categories have been added this year including; the Police Cadet of the Year Award, the Outstanding Leadership Award and the Hannah Witheridge Special Recognition Award.

Chief Constable Bailey said: “It is very pleasing that we have introduced three new categories this year, particularly the Hannah Witheridge Special Recognition Award. This award recognises the compassion, time and commitment shown by dedicated Family Liaison Officers who assist families through traumatic times.”

Local communities will also get the opportunity to vote to award individuals who make an exceptional contribution to their neighbourhood, while the Chief Constable will be choosing recipients for the Special Recognition Award and acknowledging officers and staff with Bravery Awards, which recognise outstanding courage in the line of duty.
